A Diferença Importa | Difference Matters

A Diferença Importa | Difference Matters is a photographic project by João Carlos that explores identity, dignity, and representation through portraits of individuals with intellectual and multiple disabilities.

Developed in collaboration with CERCI Braga, the series challenges the way difference is perceived, shifting the focus from labels and diagnoses to presence, individuality, and lived experience. Each portrait invites the viewer to engage with the subject beyond preconceptions, revealing strength, vulnerability, humor, and authenticity.

Rather than adopting a documentary or clinical perspective, the work approaches portraiture as a space of encounter. The images are constructed with care and intention, creating moments where the subject is not defined by condition, but by identity.

Presented at Museu dos Biscainhos as part of the cultural program of Braga 25 – Capital Portuguesa da Cultura, the project extends beyond exhibition into a broader social and cultural initiative. Through guided visits and inclusive mediation practices, it reinforces the role of art as a tool for visibility, dialogue, and social connection.

With this series, João Carlos continues his commitment to projects that bridge photography, community, and cultural programming, using the image as a means to foster empathy and challenge social narratives.
