A Visual Reflection on Aging and Human Dignity
A Idade Importa | Age Matters
A Idade Importa | Age Matters is a photographic project by João Carlos exploring aging, dignity, and the often invisible lives of older generations. Through intimate portraits and personal testimonies, the series gives visibility to individuals whose stories are frequently overlooked in contemporary society.
Developed in collaboration with the community of Lisbon’s Junta de Freguesia da Misericórdia, the project seeks to challenge the social invisibility of the elderly while highlighting the emotional depth, resilience, and humanity that accompany aging.
In a world where living longer should mean living better, many older individuals are still confronted with isolation and silence. Through this series, João Carlos continues his commitment to using photography as a tool for listening, empathy, and social reflection, capturing with sensitivity and respect the lives of those who are too often forgotten.
Beyond the photographic exhibition, the project expanded into a broader cultural initiative that included a publication documenting the participants’ stories and a public conference exploring the relationship between art, well-being, and aging, bringing together artists, psychologists, and researchers to discuss the role of culture in promoting social inclusion and emotional health.
Exhibitions
The project was presented across several cultural venues in Lisbon as part of a wider community initiative addressing aging and social inclusion:
-

-
Espaço Cultural Cinema Europa, Lisbon
-
Biblioteca de Alcântara – José Dias Coelho, Lisbon
-
Espaço Cultural das Mercês (ECM), Lisbon
Publication
The project also resulted in the book “A Idade Importa”, documenting the portraits and personal stories of the participants and extending the project’s reflection on aging, memory, and social belonging.
Public Program
As part of the initiative, João Carlos organized the public conversation:
“Arte e Bem-Estar no Envelhecimento”
Biblioteca de Alcântara – José Dias Coelho
The event brought together specialists in psychology, aging, and cultural practice to discuss the role of artistic expression in promoting well-being and social engagement during the aging process.
This project reflects João Carlos’s growing role as artist, curator, and cultural programmer, creating multidisciplinary initiatives where photography becomes a catalyst for dialogue, social awareness, and community engagement.
