A Visual Reflection on Depression and Emotional States
Stages of Depression is a conceptual photographic series that explores the emotional and psychological landscapes associated with depression. Composed of nine images, the work reflects on the complex inner experiences that accompany this mental health condition.
Rather than illustrating a clinical progression, the series presents symbolic emotional states, allowing space for personal interpretation. Each image represents a moment of vulnerability, tension, introspection, or quiet resilience, transforming internal psychological experiences into visual narratives.
In this series, João Carlos appears as both photographer and subject, using self-portraiture as a performative device to embody emotional states that are often difficult to articulate. The images operate as visual metaphors, inviting viewers to confront themes of isolation, fragility, and the silent weight carried by many who struggle with mental health.
Through this work, the artist seeks to contribute to a broader cultural conversation around depression and mental health, encouraging reflection, empathy, and dialogue.
